EVENT

2025 Cincinnati Open, R3

SCOPE

Third-round match against the tournament’s No. 4 seed, interrupted by rain and carried across two days.

SOLUTION

SpinInsight worked courtside, providing analysis and support throughout a rain-delayed second day.

RESULT

Linette defeated No. 4 seed Jessica Pegula 7-6(5), 3-6, 6-3 — her first win over Pegula in four career meetings, and her second Top-5 win of the season.

The Assignment

Most scouting work happens before a match. This assignment continued well beyond the first ball.

Linette came into the third round of the 2025 Cincinnati Open 0–3 against Jessica Pegula, the tournament’s No. 4 seed. A pre-match report can only go so far against a player a team has already studied for years. What mattered on this particular day was what happened during the match, and the match gave SpinInsight plenty to work with.

The match was interrupted by rain and carried over from one day to the next, with the third set finishing a full day after the first ball was struck. That changed the nature of the work. The focus shifted from a pre-match report to supporting decisions as the match developed, including through the overnight break.

Preparing for a familiar opponent

Before the match, the groundwork followed the same process as any opponent scouting assignment. Pegula’s recent matches were analyzed for patterns on serve, return positioning, and how she tended to play important points. The goal was to identify the details that could shape a game plan against a Top-5 opponent Linette had already faced three times.

But familiar opponents require more than repeating what is already known. The preparation focused on the tendencies most relevant to this particular match, giving Linette a clear plan for what to expect and where to look for opportunities.

Beyond the pre-match report

A report delivered the night before is useful for preparing for a match. Being onsite allowed SpinInsight to respond to what was actually happening on court and update the analysis as the match progressed.

The rain delay created an important opportunity. With the match paused, SpinInsight could review what had happened, identify what was working and what needed to change, and help prepare the plan for the resumption the following day.

That meant the preparation could continue beyond the original scouting report. The plan could be adjusted between sets, overnight, and as the match developed, rather than waiting until the next match to make changes.

Closing it out on day two

Cincinnati Open · Third round
Magda Linette 736
Jessica Pegula (4) 6(5)63
Linette took the first set in a tiebreak before Pegula leveled the match in the second. The deciding set resumed the following day, with Linette closing it out 6–3 after breaking serve to move ahead.

What onsite support changed

A win like this always comes down to the player. Linette adjusted her game plan, competed across two days, and closed out the biggest points.

What SpinInsight added was support that could respond to the match as it unfolded. When rain stopped play, the pause became an opportunity to review what had happened, refine the plan, and prepare for the match to resume the next day.

What this case shows

A Top-5 win supported by courtside analysis shows the value of having the right information and support when a match does not go according to plan.
