SCOPE

Squad-wide scouting across singles and doubles ahead of India’s away Davis Cup World Group I tie in Finland.

SOLUTION

SpinInsight provided opponent scouting and video analysis across the full Indian squad ahead of a demanding away tie.

The assignment

Davis Cup preparation comes with a level of uncertainty that most matches don’t. Team India knew which players were part of the squad, but the specific singles and doubles matchups were not confirmed until close to the tie. SpinInsight therefore had to prepare for every Finnish player who could realistically face an Indian player.

That meant scouting across the full range of possible matchups, covering both singles and doubles. The goal was to make sure the team had the information needed to prepare for whichever combinations were ultimately selected.

The preparation

Scout every possible opponent

India knew which players were in the squad, but the specific singles and doubles matchups were not confirmed until close to the tie. SpinInsight therefore prepared reports on every Finnish player who could realistically face an Indian player.

Prepare separately for doubles

With the doubles rubber capable of deciding a tight tie, potential Finnish pairings were scouted separately. The analysis considered how the players worked together, including positioning, movement, and return patterns.

Focus on recent match patterns

Recent match footage was analyzed for serve patterns, shot preferences, and how each player tended to respond under pressure on a fast indoor surface.

Prepare for every matchup

With multiple Indian players available across the singles and doubles lineup, the scouting had to work across different potential matchups. Each report gave the coaching staff information they could use as the final combinations took shape.

Prepare for the surface

Indoor hard courts can bring out different patterns than the surfaces players see most often on tour. The scouting therefore considered how each Finnish player’s game was shaped by the conditions they were most comfortable playing in.

Ahead of departure, the team met twice to go through the scouting directly. These working sessions gave the coaching staff and players an opportunity to review the material, ask questions, and leave for Finland with a clear understanding of the potential opponents.

Why the format mattered

Davis Cup ties compress a season’s worth of preparation into a single weekend. There is no gradual tournament build. The team has to be ready for the opponents in front of them from the first match. That timeline shaped the approach: reports had to be ready before the squad left home, current enough to reflect each Finnish player’s recent form, and practical enough for the team to use throughout the tie.

The impact

Davis Cup preparation is about making sure the team is ready for every possible matchup. With the singles and doubles combinations not confirmed until close to the tie, the value of the scouting was in giving the players and coaches a clear picture of the opponents they could face.

SpinInsight’s role was not to predict the result. It was to make sure the team arrived in Finland prepared, with current opponent information and a clear understanding of the tactical challenges ahead.

What this case shows

When the lineup is uncertain and the entire tie is compressed into one weekend, preparation has to cover every realistic matchup. For a Davis Cup team, that means having the right information ready before the first ball is struck.
